NRU Playoffs: Mystics Defeat Morris 64-5

PINE BANKS - Despite losing two starters due to red card suspensions following last week's match against the 'Hounds, and another two off playing with the USA Eagles and Tomahawks, Mystic River dominated the visiting METNY #4 seed Morris on a rainy day that saw 10 tries (7 converted) for the Mystics.

The rain played a huge factor in what began as a sloppy match for both teams in the early minutes.  Morris was able to capitalize with a run through the Mystic defense and take an early 5-0 lead.

But that would do it for the visitors as the Mystics grew accustomed to nature's onslaught and rallied  with 10 unanswered tries of their own, three coming from team captain (and Man of the Match) Jamie Green for an impressive 64-5 win.

Elsewhere in the Northeast, Old Blue, New Haven and New York beat their opponents, advancing to the NRU Championships next week in New York.

Mystics Defeat White Plains
By Alex Goff, Rugby Magazine

Mystic River remains in first place in the New England with a 31-7 defeat of White Plains. Mystic is 5-0 with games against Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Albany left on their schedule.

"It was good to drive down there and get a win," said Mystic head coach Scot Durkin. "The best part was we avoided the Nor'easter that hit everyone else. I think the boys played well enough to win, but that was about it. It was a stop-start game, not very memorable, but I'll take an away win any day of the week."

With a game in hand over their closest rivals Mystic seems to be pulling away.

Mystics Blank Hounds in NE 10's Final

Mystic River continues to dominate the summer rugby schedule with another 1st place trophy at the Acton 10’s tournament. Led by repeat tournament MVP David “Sliver” Barry, the Mystics demolished the competition with wins of 51-5 over Middlesex College, 57-7 over Old Gold 2, 36-7 over Boston and 57-0 over Providence to set up a final with cross-town rival Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

The first half was marked by tough team defense and bone crunching hits by Mystic Jake Sprague. It was only a matter of time before the Mystics hit their top form and phenomenal play by scrumhalf Alex O’Mahoney got the boys up and running. Burgers, Jake and Alex Brussard dominated the Hounds up front, and Evin O'Driscoll, Sliver, Adnan Kawuma and Dimitri “Greek Olive” Efthimiou turned on the jets for 21 unanswered points and the 1st place trophy.

The young guns of the Mystic 2’s took a tough loss in the Plate finals 12-5 to South Shore, narrowly missing a clean sweep for the Mystics.

Congrats to the whole first team on their championship win… and thanks to all the Big Blue supporters and friends for bringing the true Mystic spirit to win the day on all counts.

NERFU U19 Wins Potomac Challenge Cup

The New England U-19 Men’s team, with Mystic River's Alex BrussardMichael Rudzinsky and Dimitri Efthimiou, went 4–0 to win the 2009 Potomac Challenge Cup at Founders Field in Pittsburgh, PA. Saturday’s wins included 14–7 vs Minnesota, and 31–5 vs EPRU.

Sunday saw the team get past PRU, 24–5, to set them up for the final against MetNY. Despite the low score, play went up and down the pitch in a defensive struggle that saw the teams even at 5 at the end of regulation time. In the single 5 minute extra period, MetNY touched down and converted to go ahead 12–5 with slightly more than 2 minutes remaining.

Almost at the end of the period, NERFU stole a MetNY lineout, and, with quick ball through the hands, touched down to give them a chance to tie.

The conversion was good, sending the game to kicks at goal, with Brussard sealing the win with his 22-meter drop kick.

Mystic River Rugby Club's Dimitri Efthimiou was voted MVP of the tournament.

2009 Mystic River Summer Youth Rugby

MALDEN, MA - For the past three years Mystic River has run a Summer Youth Rugby Program. The program is primarily aimed at introducing local children to rugby, and to provide them and their parents a greater understanding of the sport. A non-contact version of the game called American Flag Rugby is played which is similar to Flag Football.

This version of rugby is designed specifically for the American child; no experience necessary, fully inclusive, and with a level of structure and discipline that Americans have come to expect from recreational sports. In this game, kids play a version of rugby where the defense removes the ball carrier’s Velcro flag instead of creating a tackle situation.

Coaches are required to complete the Rookie Rugby certification program provided by USA Rugby. We plan to have a ratio of at least 1 coach per 8 kids. The children range in age from 6-14, and the program is open to both boys and girls. Each participant will receive a Mystic Youth Rugby jersey.

This is all about children having fun and running with a ball. The major reason for local program success to date is that it’s fun! Unlike some sports that kids participate in, American Flag Rugby gets every child actively involved. This is wildly attractive to kids who previously spent long days in an outfield or goal box. Everyone touches the ball in rugby and everyone can score points, kids of all ages can play together and skills required are inclusive of a wide range of athletic abilities.

Mystic River defeats Kinsale RFC 47-20

Malden, MA - An entertaining match between Mystic River and Kinsale RFC played before 100 or so spectators on a sunny, warm late afternoon/early evening.

Spectators were treated to a bag pipe/band introduction, presentation by both team's presidents, short exchange by Malden and Melrose's mayors and the assistant mayor of Kinsale.

The decision was made to play four 20 minute quarters allowing for water breaks so both sides would not succumb to the heat. What was supposed to be a friendly match, quickly turned into a fierce competition.
Kinsale moved ahead 10-0 but after a few breaks, Mystic moved ahead 21-13 at half-time on three converted tries.

The second half was all Mystic River, running in four more tries and three conversions to one converted try by Kinsale.

Again the Mystics found themselves defending their own goal line with no time on the clock but deployed an attacking defense and turned the ball over to kick to touch and secure the win 25-21.

Now the Mystics will travel to South Carolina in three weeks for their second straight Sweet 16 appearance and hope to get a strong Mystic contingent there for support as they battle for a spot in the National Final 4!

Mystics Beat New Haven , Clinch 2nd

PINE BANKS - In the final week of the regular NERFU season, Mystic River took on the New Haven Old Black Rugby Club.

New Haven had catapulted into 1st place in New England, winning their last five games and outscoring their opponents 242-33.

While the Mystics, coming off an embarrassing loss against Boston the week prior, needed to secure a win to put them in position to play at Pine Banks in round one of the NRU Playoffs.

Old Black came out strong, putting the Mystics on the back foot for much of the first half.  But the Mystic forwards easily handled New Haven's pick-and-go vertical style, stopping them from making the gain line.

Luke Brown, Dan Mayton, Joe Shurmatis and Brandon Sparks all touched down for the Mystics, with flyhalf Derrick Roma converting 3 of 4 and slotting a penalty to give the Mystic s a  commanding 29-0 lead.

But New Haven retaliated late in the match touching down two converted tries of their own to make the final score 29-12.

This win, coupled with the Wolfhounds 24-0 shutout victory over Boston, gives the Mystics 2nd place over all in New England and home field advantage for the NRU Playoffs.

With the regular season coming to a close and two tough matches ahead, it was a must win for the Mystics, who fell to the 'Hounds the week prior. The Mystic forwards came out strong, dominating the Albany pack, while the Mystic back line penetrated through the gaps and kept Albany on the retreat throughout much of the half. By the halftime whistle, the Mystics had taken a commanding 27-3 lead.

Determined not to go down without a fight, Albany fought back in the second half and added ten points to their tally, but the Mystics never let up the onslaught and took the match 51-13. The win put Mystic River back on the top of the table going into the final two matches.

Mystic Second XV Fall to Albany

ALBANY, NY - Once again facing a seasoned side of veterans, the Mystic Second XV lost their second match in a row to Albany this past weekend. In the forwards, it was a tooth and nail battle as both packs seemed evenly matched. Mystic forwards repeatedly pounded the ball into the opposition, but were stopped by a well organized Albany defensive line. Albany was able to take advantage of some disorganization in the Mystic defensive line, punching through for five tries. Mystic scrumhalf and "Man of the Match" Peter Chung scored Mystic's two tries to make the score 31-10 in Albany's favor.

Mystics Fall to 'Hounds in Canton

CANTON, MA - Week five of the NERFU season pitted the undefeated Mystics against an equally hungry and undefeated Boston Irish Wolfhounds at the Irish Cultural Center. The Wolfhounds took an early 7 point lead with a well worked converted-try, and for the bulk of the first half the match remained at 7-0 until Mystic flyhalf Derrick Roma put the Mystics onto the scoreboard with a penalty kick through the uprights.

Another penalty early in the second half would cut the 'Hounds lead down to one point causing the Mystics and the Wolfhounds to raise the intensity higher still, with both teams demonstrating some incredibly aggressive rucking. A third penalty would give the Mystics a 9-7 lead, but with the minutes ticking away, the 'Hounds were able to work the ball up the field to score the go ahead try. A final long range penalty goal by BIW as time expired pushed the final score to 15-9 in favor of the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

Streak Ends for Mystic 2nd XV

CANTON, MA - The Mystic 2nd XV took the field at the ICC to face off against their toughest opponent of the season thus far, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds. The seasoned Wolfhound side took control of the match early, taking advantage of the much younger and less experienced Mystic side, keeping them on their heels throughout much of the first half. The one sided shut out was finally broken by Mystic scrumhalf Peter Chung, who retrieved his own pop kick over the 'Hounds defensive line to touch it down between the posts.

The second half saw a change in the Mystics. Down by several tries and knowing the match well out of reach, the Mystics never let up. With veterans Kareem Afifi and Chris Petrigno leading by example, the Mystic pack began to show some life smashing into the Wolfhound defenders. The backline was also able to work out the kinks of the previous half and work the ball wide, where Mystic's resident Frenchman Stephan Escrig , towing three Wolfhound defenders managed to keep his feet and set up Bobby Ankenbauer with the Mystic's only other try of the match.

By Alex Goff, eRugbyNews

Mystic beat Boston Irish Wolf-hounds 47-0 in 2007, but it's a whole different story this time as both are 3-0 going into Saturday's match.

That dark cloud you see over the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Mass. won’t bring in rain so much as a storm of rugby as two clubs undefeated in New England’s DI league face off for league supremacy.

Mystics On A Rampage

From DI Clubs Around The Country

By Alex Goff, eRugbyNews

In New England, Mystic River is in first place after their 25-19 win over Amoskeag. Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Boston RFC are also 3-0.

”We took them on in the backs to our detriment,” said Mystic’s Scot Durkin. “We turned over the ball and they ran through us for three quick tries. In the second half we keep the ball in the forwards and we fought back with 25 points to nil.

All around this was the best win I have been associated with as coach of the Mystics. We have the ability to change plans and confidently carry out a different game plan. It shows our team is starting to mature.”

Mystic 2nd XV Win Third Straight

MANCHESTER, NH - Following the nail-biting victory by the First XV, the Mystic Bs took the field to take on Amoskeag. Mystic forwards provided pressure from the get go, hammering into their New Hampshirian counterparts. Scrumhalf Peter Chung did a superb job of getting the ball to a hungry Mystic backline led by captain Bobby Ankenbauer, who were able to find the gaps, weaving through Amoskeag's defenses to touch the ball down between the posts.

With the help some A-Side starters, Amoskeag began to fight back punching through for a few tries of their own. But the Mystics rose to the challenge and never let up, taking their third win of the season 37-17.

Late Mystic Rally Robs Amoskeag

MANCHESTER, NH - The weather was perfect, the field conditions were perfect. The Mystics performance in the first half... not so much. Amoskeag came out strong, taking advantage of a static Mystic defensive line and scoring three tries while conceding only one penalty to lead 19-3 at the half. Mystic Head Coach Scot Durkin made no great motivational speeches during the break, and instead opted to let the lads sort it out themselves.

The second half saw a complete reversal of fortunes. Trying desperately to claw their way back into the match, the Mystics constantly drove the ball down field and kept Amoskeag on their heels. Three tries from flanker Sean Burgess put the Mystics within one point and the conversion from Derrick Roma would give them a 20-19 lead. A fourth try from Dan Mayton in the final minutes of a nail-biting half would secure the win for the Mystics 25-19.

Mystics Blank Worcester in Week 2

PINE BANKS - In Week 2 of the regular season, Mystic River took the field against Worcester in a match that could only be called "one-sided".  The Mystics completely dominated the Worcester scrum and the Mystic back line was able to penetrate often.  Eleven Tries were scored in the shutout victory, including two from veteran hooker Jim Calmas and another from Dimitri Efthimiou, his third of the season.  Mystic flyhalf Derrick Roma slotted seven conversions to add to the final 69-0 win.

The Second XV were no less impressive as they took it to Worcester and allowed only one converted try for a 43-7 win.

PINE BANKS - As Tropical Storm Hannah covered the northeast in rain and oppressive humidity, the Mystics opened their 2008 season against the Connecticut Yankees. Winning Streak Ends For Mystics

BOSTON, MA - It was an inevitable outcome. When two undefeated squads take the field, only one can remain undefeated. Unfortunately for the Mystics, it was Boston who took that honor. It was a grueling back and forth defensive match up between the top two teams in New England.

The Mystics were able to shut down Boston's initial attack, but a penalty in range of the posts would give Boston first blood and an early lead. This would also be the only score of the first half.  Late into the second half Boston let loose with a kick down field which was recovered for a try that would put the game out of reach for the Mystics.  Mystic River finished the season with a 6-1 record and despite the loss, will enter the playoffs as the number one seed in New England.

Mystics Make Statement at NERFU Cup

NEWPORT, RI - Mystic River knew the NERFU tournament would be a step up from their Spring schedule, but solid preparations set the stage for their long awaited showcase. Easily the youngest overall team in Division I, the Blue were hungry from the get-go as they faced #2 ranked Amoskeag in the first match. While the forwards dominated possession of the pill, Vice Captain Jamie Green exploded out of the backline for multiple tries on the day; he was clearly a stand out. Amoskeag fell to the Mystics, 14-3.

Later, in the Semi-finals, the Mystics gave the crowd a show as they questioned and challenged the Wolfhounds title as the elite team in New England. The dominant Mystic forwards, for the first time, had met an equally powerful pack. While the Mystic backs outmatched their Green and Yellow opposites and scored under the posts, the "super-league" savvy forwards were able to take advantage of good field position and sneak by the Mystic defense. Even though the Blue fell to the Wolfhounds 17-7 in a game that was close to the very end, their efforts were rewarded in knowing that they matched up very well against the top competition.

This outright dominance in and around the rucks forced our opponents to tighten up their defense and the Mystic backline was given room to showcase their talent scoring multiple tries on the outside for a final tally of 42-14. This was an important game, but the taste of victory has only sparked a deeper hunger in the Blue for another win.

Mystics Suffer Another Disappointing Loss

CANTON, MA - The Boston Irish Wolfhounds got back to their winning ways at the weekend with a 34-16 win over Mystic River. The game was played in perfect Fall conditions at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA. The Wolfhounds jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead, with tries by prop Chris Wheeler (2), and fullback Ian Flanagan. Flanagan in particular caused problems for the Mystic defense, using the freedom of the full back position to launch a number of long runs. One of the tries was converted by Shane Moore for the Wolfhounds. Mystic countered with two penalties by center Geordie Miliotis to round out the first half scoring.

The second half was an entertaining spectacle, as both teams upped the intensity significantly. Another try from Flanagan stretched the Wolfhounds lead. Mystics gradually worked their way back into the game, with outhalf Glynn MacKenzie crashing over from short range. The Wolfhounds regrouped and closed out the scoring with a try from replacement center Treeve Currie to leave the final score at 34-16 to the Wolfhounds.
