Mystic River is the new Northeast Rugby Union champion after knocking off Long Island 36-15 in Sunday’s championship final.
Six tries to two was the final margin at the end of the 80 minutes.
After a grueling weekend of doubleheaders, the Mystics will now focus on their next test which will be crossover playoff games against Mid-Atlantic rivals to determine the CR4 teams that will go to the national playoffs.
On Sunday, Brett Willis, Dan Mayton, Jamie Green, Sean Burgess, Parnell Adam, and Joe Shurmaitis all dotted down for Mystic River. Captain and goal-kicker Pat Doherty landed three conversions.
Long Island added a penalty goal and conversion to their two tries.
“We’re pretty happy with it, but we have higher aspirations,” Mystic River’s Brett Willis told ARN.
The next challenge for Mystic River will be a knockout game against the #4 seed from the Mid-Atlantic in two weeks’ time.
In the earlier game, White Plains defeated Old Blue 33-24.
Saturday’s results:
Mystic River 61-3 Old Blue
