October 4, 2003 - Albany
A Mystics 19 - Albany 21
B Mystics 29 - Albany 26
It was not a great day for the
official opening of the field as the rain tumbled down and the Autumn air blew
cool. This deterred the big crowds expected, however, the superb new field did
not seem to mind as it effortlessly drained the water and presented a dry
surface for us to face Albany.
It was a must win for the 'A' side and after a controlled and determined first
30min Mystic led 14-0. The first try went to Matty Worschaack who, after
some quick close contact passing post contact from Rapoza and
Allsworth, bumped off two covering tackles to dive in under the posts. A
fine backline support movement. The second was posted by Will Barlow who
crashed over with the support of the entire pack. Both tries were coverted by
Albrecht and the Mystic spirit was bubbling.
Albany grabbed some points late in the half to close the half time margin to
14-7.
Mystic came out firing after the break and after a clever movement down the
short side by Yami and Allsworth the Albany coffin seemed well
prepared at 19-7. However, Albany clung to the side of their grave creeping
their way back into the match via some penalties issued for Mystic ill
discipline. Their confidence rose and their effort increased. Mystic could not
harness the groundswell, errors snowballed, and with 2 minutes remaining Albany
forced their way across the line to be behind 19-18. The conversion, 15 metres
to the right of the posts, sailed over the black dot. Final score 20-19.
The 'B' side were heart broken with two minutes remaining in their match when
Albany slotted a tidy field goal to hit the lead 29-26. Mystic, a winning side,
refused to accept defeat even with time and probability against them. They piled
on the pressure at the first breakdown and forced a error. The forwards secured
the ball for the backs and a swift backline play saw Chris angle through,
decisively step the fullback and swan dive under the posts. A great determined
runner finally rewarded for his quality line selection. The 'B' side had
snatched victory back off Albany and danced in the rain with it haloing above.
Congratulations also goes to Brad 'Big Brain' Dzierzak who ran 20 yards
to waltz over untouched in the first half.
