Hope you all had an excellent Memorial Day Weekend celebrating and remembering those that have served the United States of America. On Saturday, Mystic River Rugby Club played two matches to open up the New England Free Jacks’ Military Appreciation Day, where the Free Jacks would ultimately win their match, over the Toronto Arrows, 14-12.
On 5/22/2021, Mystic River Rugby Club’s Premier side traveled to play the Houston Sabercats’ Academy Team, Rugby HTX. Mystic entered the match undefeated but knew they were facing a physical opponent.
On Saturday, May 15th, Mystic River held its first full-day rugby event at Pine Banks Park since fall, 2019, and what a beautiful day it wound up being. Mystic River Youth Rugby started off the day bright and early with a fast & informative youth clinic. The kids had a great time, and it was a perfect way to commence “Club Day.” Two Mystic men’s matches were set to follow up the clinic, and a pitch-side barbecue was there to feed the traveling teams and the Mystic faithful!
It is with a heavy heart we share the unfortunate news that Bobby Engel, an Original member of Mystic River Rugby Club, passed away on 5/1/2021. The following is a note that Bobby’s family sent over to another one of our Original Mystics.
We don’t need to revisit what happened during 2020, but we hope everyone and their families and friends have stayed healthy and safe during these strange and uncertain times. With that being said, the Mystic men are back at Pine Banks Park training under Massachusetts’ COVID-19 guidelines and to date, they faced off in the 1st Mystic River “Battle of the Families,” where “Team Lyons” and “Team Sullivan” battled it out in the club’s first live rugby since pre-pandemic, and then, this past Saturday, May 8th, Mystic sent two sides to Philadelphia as Schuylkill River hosted our Monsters of Malden for the first rugby match played against an opponent since November 2nd, 2019.
