Coaching Change Comes at Critical Time

So Mystic River has a new coach and gets into the playoffs – well done for them. But hold on one moment; John Banarhall joined Mystic River in the week before Halloween … by that point the Mystics had already secured said playoff spot.

They had done so, however, unclear about their direction as players and as a team. Banarhall, who left Amoskeag on fairly good terms and remains on the club’s Board, has brought in structure.

Mystic River Name Banarhall Coach

The Mystic River Rugby Club is pleased to announce that John A. Banarhall has agreed to become their new head coach.

Coach Banarhall comes to the Mystics after serving for over 6 years as the head coach and Director of Rugby at Amoskeag RFC. In addition, he has served as head coach of Amokeag’s U-19 team for 3 years. He is well known in national circles, having served as a manager and coach for the USA Rugby U-19 team from 2003 to 2007. He will be assisted by Jacob Sprague (former USA Eagle prop) and Nick Murphy.

Banarhall brings with him a reputation for thorough preparation as well as a tireless commitment to the fundamentals of rugby within the context of the modern game. The Mystics are certain that he will help them to achieve success at the highest levels and are proud to welcome him to Mystic Nation.

Boston, Mystic Battle for Beantown Bragging Rights

The New England DI championship has already been clinched by Mystic River, and this game has no tangible bearing on Boston RFC’s season or overall mission. Nonetheless, Saturday’s matchup between the two old foes is a big one that both clubs want to win.

“A lot of pride in this game,” added Mystic River coach Ted Vassallo. “It’s always a great rivalry in Boston vs. Mystics. Mystic River evolved from Boston rugby, so it’s always something special for Mystic and its old boys. Brings out a big crowd, great atmosphere for rugby, New England, so we’re really looking forward to it.”

Calling All Mystics to Homecoming!!

MALDEN, MA – This Saturday (9/25), Mystic River Rugby Club will host our annual homecoming weekend at Pine Banks Park in Malden.

Kickoff will be at 1PM against White Plains with B side and Old Boys matches to follow. We will also host a BBQ at the pitch and present our player awards for the 2009-10 competitive season.
