NEWPORT, RI – As the fog rolled in off Narragansett Bay, the Mystic River Rugby Club took on METNY’s top seeded Old Blue RFC in round one of the NRU playoff seeding tournament.
However, it was a much different New York side than the Mystics faced in last year’s tournament where the Mystics sailed to an easy 61-3 victory.
This time around. Old Blue was ready, scoring three converted and blanking the Mystics 21-nil. A shutout win by NERFU rival, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, will have the Mystics going head to head against New Haven to battle for third place in the NRU.
The Mystic River Rugby Club is prepared to defend its 2007-08 NRU Championship title this weekend in Newport, RI. The Mystics will take on Old Blue at 1:45PM on Saturday, with the NRU championship on Sunday at 12:00PM.
PINE BANKS – It was a hotly contested affair with the Mystic Old Boys running in two early tries, but the Senators were able to respond with a try under the posts.
The Mystic backs continued to test the Senators defense, but solid tackling kept them at bay and giving the Canadian side the win at the final whistle.
